What is the Reactor Officer (RO) responsible for?
Operation and Maintenance of reactor
What is the Engineering Officer (CHENG) responsible for?
Ship’s machinery, damage and casualty control, repair of hull and machinery, power lighting, water maintenance, and underwater fittings
Damage Control Assistant (DCA)
Assists the CHENG concerning ship’s damage control efforts
Main Propulsion Assistant (MPA)
MPA assists the RO concerning ship’s propulsion plants.
What is the principal source of energy and is supplied by the ship’s reactor plant?
Steam
How is the steam supplied to the catapult systems?
Drawn from the REACTOR to the CATAPULT STEAM RECEIVER/ACCUMULATOR then directed to the LAUNCH VALVES.
High Pressure (HP) Compressed Air
4,200 psi Four – HST #1 & #2 - #1 MMR #3 & #4 - #2 MMR 4th Deck
Low Pressure (LP) Compressed Air
125 psi Three – HST #1 - #1 MMR #2 - #2 RAR #3 - #3 RAR
Ship’s Service Turbine Generator’s (SSTG’s)
Provide electricity throughout the ship
Driven by Turbines
Four – HST
2 in each MMR
Emergency Diesel Generators (EDG’s)
Diesel Driven
Four – HST
2 – FWD EDG room
2 – AFT EDG room
What is the function of Boilers?
Convert water into steam.
What is the function of Evaporators?
De-salinate seawater

Provide 100,000 gal/day
Purpose of the Electro-hydraulic steering gear:
Links the bridge helm with the ships steering plant
Define Bit
Secure mooring lines
Define Chock:
Heavy fitting through which mooring lines are fed
3 Types of Chocks
Open, Closed and Roller
Define Cleat
Consists of horns for belaying lines
Define Capstan
Vertical cylinder; used to tighten ships mooring lines
State the characteristics of the Anchor Chain.
Length – 1,080 feet 12 shots 15 fathoms = 1 shot Mark 2 Stockless Fathom = 6 feet 1 shot = 90 feet Each shot connected by detachable link
Define Chain Stopper
Secure the anchor chain
3 types of Replenishment at Sea
Underway Replenishment
Vertical Replenishment
Connected Replenishment
Underway Replenishment (UNREP)
Transfer fuel, ammunition, supplies, and personnel from one ship to another while underway.
Vertical Replenishment (VERTREP)
Use of helicopters to transfer cargo between ships while underway
Connected Replenishment (CONREP)
Two or more ships side by side connected
Conning Officer:
JOOD Underway
Responsible for all steering and engineering orders
Boatswain’s Mate of the Watch
In charge of the enlisted bridge watch team.
How many lookouts on HST?
Four – 2 on the Fantail, and 2 on the Signal Bridge
Difference between emergency and standard breakaway:
Procedures are performed at a more rapid sequence/pace
3 Common Types of Man-Overboard recovery
Shipboard – least preferred
MWB or HRIB
Helo – preferred
