Carpopedal spasm Flashcards
What causes carpal spasm.
The most common causes of spasms are overused muscles (in the hands that might be due to writing or typing) and dehydration. Other causes of muscle cramping include low levels of calcium and magnesium.
What is Hypothyroidism?
Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough essential hormones for the body to function properly. This can cause you to experience joint pain, fatigue, depression, and muscle contractions. In more severe cases of hypothyroidism, symptoms can be life-threatening.
What is Hypocalcemia?
Hypocalcemia, or calcium deficiency, can lead to other health conditions including osteoporosis and bone fractures. Calcium is essential for your overall health, and is also vital for muscle contraction. Low calcium levels can spur carpopedal spasms as a warning sign. This reaction is usually followed by other symptoms including brittle nails, sensations in your fingers and toes, and patchy hair.
Where is the thyroid gland?
The thyroid gland covers the windpipe from three sides.
What is the purpose of the thyroid gland?
Without a functioning thyroid, the body would not be able to break down proteins and it would not be able to process carbohydrates and vitamins. For this reason, problems with this gland can lead to uncontrollable weight gain.
What does the thyroid gland need the assistance of in order to produce hormones?
