A
S. mutans (initiator), Lactobacillus (responsible for progression of caries),
and actinomyces V.
2
Q
What is the demineralization pH of hydroxyapatite (enamel)?
A
pH < 5.5
3
Q
What is the demineralization pH of fluorapatite?
A
pH < 4.5
4
Q
What is the demineralization pH of dentin?
A
pH < 6.2
* Proteolytic enzymes (MMPs) removed organic partition (collagen) so remineralization may not be possible
5
Q
What are dietary habits that affect caries?
A
- Frequent snacking/drinking of carbohydrates (primarily sucrose) in between meals increase caries risk
- Consuming sugar without chewing does not stimulate saliva and increases caries risk

Pit and fissure areas on NONCAVITATED TEETH
