what is the difference between stereotype and generalisation?
stereotype is an ending point
generalisation is a beginning point
i.e. generalisation allows you to correct the content addressed and make it more specific while stereotype is an idea formed from the content that you can’t change/is set in stone
e.g.
S: ‘Afghans have large families’ (assumption)
G: To Afghan patient, ‘how many people are there in your family?’
what is ethnocentrism?
the attitude that other ways of doing things/other beliefs are unnatural and barbaric
most humans are ethnocentric
western healthcare systems tend to be ethnocentric
what is cultural relativism?
the attitude that other ideas/ways of doing things are different but equally valid
what is a world view?
peoples assumptions about the nature of reality and people tend to interpret events in a manner consistent with their beliefs/world view
what is the difference between emic and etic perspectives?
emic = from within the culture/socially neutral etic = from outside/the observer/culturally neutral
emic = patient etic = doctor
what is the difference between hierarchical and egalitarian cultures?
hierarchical - we are not equal - status based on age, sex, occupation, etc.
egalitarian - we are all equal
describe the holistic model of disease.
forces of nature must be in balance body, physical universe and meta-physical universe. disease caused by imbalance
describe the magic-religious model of disease.
disease caused by dominating supernatural forces
describe the biomedical model of disease.
disease caused by physical and biochemical processes.
what is cultural competence?
the level of knowledge-based skills required to provide effective clinical care to patients from a particular ethnic or racial group.
