Caribou Flashcards
What are the main factors leading to caribou declines?
Habitat loss
Degradation
Fragmentation
Predation
Example of habitat degradation for caribou
Wildfires
Timber harvesting
Example of habitat fragmentation cause
breaking up by roads timber havest or cut blocks pipelines oil and gas well sites geophysical exploration lines
How many woodlane caribou populations are in alberta?
16
What is the major cause of calf death in non-hunted caribou herds?
predation
What is the main prey of wolves in northeastern Alberta?
Moose
What is a concern if we cull wolves and then stop?
There will be a population boom
What is the relationship between the density of seismic lines on the landscape and average survival of adult caribou?
negative relationship
What is a behavioural adaptation of a predator with respect to linear features on landscape?
They might use them to travel more efficiently
What might be an adaptation of prey species with respect to linear features on a landscape?
Might start to stay away from them if there are more predators travelling on them
What is a major issue with roads and caribou conservation?
They can make it harder for caribou populations to spread out because they are soft barriers. this can make the presence of caribou more predictable for predators.
Why might caribou prefer to live in peatlands?
To avoid predators
Why are black bears potentiallly important in caribou conservation?
They might prey on the calves, especiallly if foraging in peatlands and bogs
What might happen with other species if you kill wolves?
raccoons go up. deer go upcaribou go up, skunk go up, squirrel go up. plants go down because of this. eagles go up because more skunks and squirrels.
