caregiver-infant interactions (attachment) Flashcards
attachment
Attachment = a strong reciprocal emotional bond between an infant and a primary care giver
characteristics of attachment - proximity :stay physically close
separation distress: shows distress when an attachment figure leaves their presence
secure base behaviour -make regular contact with our attachment figure
reciprocity
responding to the action of another with a similar action
- the actions of one partner elicit a response from the other partner
- interaction flows both ways between adult and infants if they are taking turns
eg. if the mother smiles the infant will smile back
Interactional synchrony
- adults respond in time to sustain communication
- when 2 people interact they tend to mirror what the others doing in terms of facial and body movements
- includes emotions and behaviours eg perfectly in time as if they were one pass
- important for the development of attachment
Interactional synchrony(study)
meltz and moore
- children as young as 2 weeks old
-4 stimuli(3 facial gestures and one hand gesture)
-observation study using behaviour categories
eg mouth opening
association found between expression/gesture of the adult and the action of the babies
