Caregiver-infant interactions Flashcards
Reciprocity?
When the caregiver respond to each others action in a form of communication.
Alert phases?
Periodic phases which they signal with eye contact and are used to show they are ready for stimulation via interaction, Feldman and Eidelman, 2007.
Active involvement?
Babies have an active role in receiving care as they preform actions to gain care from a caregiver, Brazelton et al., 2975
Interactional synchrony
When caregiver and baby mirror each others action or have a synchrony in doing so, Feldman, 2007
Importance of attachment?
Interactional synchrony is important for attachment as higher level of synchrony are associated with here levels of attachment, Russel Isabella et al., 1989
Evaluations +
- Filmed observation, allows for peer to peer assessment and lab studies mean less variables to distract the baby.
- Research support - Isabella et al., 1989 proves the importance of Interactional synchrony
- Practical application - understanding caregiver- infant interactions allows us to understand what a healthy attachment is
Evaluations -
- Difficulty observing babies - babies are hard to understand and control for laboratory experiments
- Developmental importance - observing babies != development of attachment.
