Caregiver/infant interactions Flashcards
What is attachment?
An emotional link between an infant and caregiver, feeling more secure when there is a presence of the attachment figure
When does attachment start?
Interactions between infant and caregiver
What has a deep effect on an infants attachment?
Responsiveness of caregiver
What are the three ways to recognise an infant has an attachment?
Proximity
Separation distress
Secure base behaviour
What is proximity in relation to attachment?
People try and stay physically close to those they are attached to
What is separation distress?
People are distressed when an attachment figure leaves their presence
What is secure base behaviour?
We always “touch base” with our attachment figure regularly to return to their attachment
What is interactional synchrony?
Caregiver and infant respond in time to keep going, their actions mirror each others
EG smiling at the same time
Who conducted research into caregiver-infant interactions?
Meltzoff and Moore
What was Meltzoff and Moores sample into caregiver-infant interactions?
Forty 2-week old babies
What was Meltzoff and Moores experimental method?
Controlled observation
How did Meltzoff and Moore measure caregiver-infant interactions?
An adult displayed one of three facial expressions/distinct gestures. The child’s response was filmed and identified
What did Meltzoff and Moore find in their research into caregiver-infant interactions?
There was a link between facial expressions/gesture of the adult and response to the baby
What is reciprocity?
A two may-mutual process where infant and caregiver take turn to respond to each others behaviours to continue interaction
Who suggested babies have alert phases?
Feldman and Eidelman
