What was the 1870 ARmy Act?
Lower ranks enlisted for less time:
-12 years, 6 in army and 6 in reserve
Daily rate was paid
after 12 years soldiers could resign without a pension or continue and receive a pension at the end of service
What was the 1871 regularisation of the forces act?
-Regiments reorganised into regions, with local barracks
-All regiments were to have 2 linked battalions, one home on abroad
-Local militia in each are made up each regiment’s third battalion
These changes made service more acceptable to recruits and ensured there will always be trained soldiers in Britain
What other Reforms happened?
Service conditions were improved:
-no branding or flogging
Purchase system was abolished
Training improved:
-Officers came into the army via the Junior Department of the Royal Military College
-Artillery engineering officers trained at the Woolwich Military Academy
What changes were made to make up for the Crimean War organisation embarrassment?
Most army works were moved to the war office:
- it took over transport, supplies, including uniforms
- An army clothing department was formed
How was requisitioning handled?
War Office cut back on requisitioning (demanding supplies from private owners without payment)
- 1885 The war office formed the Land Transport Corps with its own wagons and animals to pull them
- 1888, Army Service Corps created. Troops were specialised in the provision and movement of supplies
