Cardiovascular Variation 2 Flashcards
Variation affecting bloodflow
Why do some people form plaques at the bifurcation of the carotid and others don’t - why only one side also
Range in diameters of internal and external carotids at the bifurcation - if going from large to very small then could be a risk
Schulz and Rothwell, (2001)
Close correlation of asymetry of the 2 anterior carotid arteries and developing a berry aneurysm
May be due to a build up of shear stress due to increased flow through one side
Horikoshi et al., (2002)
Hypoperfusion a large contributor to migraine so incomplete circle of Willis may be an associated factor in migraine
Bugnicourt et al., (2009)
Impact on clinical procedures
Variation of the location of the internal jugular vein causing problems with central venous access as is commonly done using anatomical landmarks
Jugular variation may be present in as much as 36% of pts
Benter et al., (2001)
When comparing venous access obtained using anatomical landmarks alone to that using US was significantly more succesful with 100% of pts cannulated under US and 88% for US
Denys et al., (1993)
Incomplete arterial arch in the hand
If take radial artery will leave the 10% of pts without a complete arch with arterial insufficiency
Parks et al., (1978)
Vessel variations affecting hepatic transplant
Abdullah et al., (2006)
