Cardiovascular system (Lecture 12) Flashcards
What is the structure of the cardiac wall?
What are the components of the endocardium?
Endothelium
Subendothelium
- Loose connective tissue)
Elastic muscular layer
Subendocardial layer:
- Blood vessels
- Nerves
- Purkynje fibres

In the myocardium –> Sheets of cardiomyocytes separated by a small amount of connective tissue.

What is this slide?
What is the general structure of blood vessels?
Tunica intima:
- Endothelium + subendothelial layer of loose connective tissue
- Longitudinal arrangement
Tunica media:
- Concentric layers of smooth muscle cells
- Collagen + elastic fibres + proteoglycans
- Lamina elastica interna and externa
- Pericytes - ‘media’ of capillaries and post capillary venules
Tunica adventitia:
- Longitudinally oriented collagen and elastic fibres
- Vasa vasorum - penetrate from adventitia to media
- Lymphatic capillaries - media of veins and advantitia of arteries
What are the types of arteries?
- Arterioles
- Muscular arteries
- Elastic arteries
What is this slide?
Arteriole
50-300um
1-5 layers of smooth muscle cells
