Cardiovascular System Flashcards
What are the physiological needs met by cardiovascular system
Transport nutrients, gases, waste products around body
Protect body from infection/blood loss
Maintain constant body temp
Maintain fluid balance
3 types of heart wall
Pericardium, endocardium, myocardium
Cardiac muscle is….
Branched, fibres join by intercalated discs which conduct electrical impulses from 1 cell to another
What happens if coronary arteries become blocked
Damages the myocardium
What is needed to cause muscle contraction to pump blood around lungs
ATP
What is vasodilation and vasoconstriction
Vasodilation = widening of blood vessels
Vasoconstriction = narrowing of blood vessels
Differences between artery and vein
Artery = thick outer wall, small lumen
Vein = thin layer of muscle/elastic fibres, large lumen
Capillary = small lumen, wall made of a single layer of cell
What is heart rate/pulse
Measured in beats per minute minute
What are the 2 phases of the cardiac cycle
Diastole and systole
Diastole and systole
Diastole = ventricles relaxed
Systole = ventricles contracts
ECG
Electrocardiography is non-invasive produced by an electrocardiograph
The ECG records electrical activity in the heart
What is a drug used for treating cardiovascular system
Digoxin - drug used for treating cardiovascular system
Has a number of effects on heart including ability to slow heart rate and help it beat regularly
How does digoxin slow heart rate
Disturbs concentration of ions in cardiac muscle and reduces conductivity within AV node
Blood functions
Transports oxygen and nutrients to lungs and tissues, forms blood clots, regulates body temps
Different types of cells in the blood
RBC’s, WBC’s , platelets, plasma
