cardiovascular system Flashcards
what is the path of blood?
- superior/inferior vena cava
- right atrium
- tricuspid valve
- right ventricle
- pulmonary artery
- lungs
- pulmonary veins
- left atrium
- mitral valve
- left ventricle
10 1/2. septum? - aorta
what are the jobs of the cardiovascular system?
brings oxygen and nutrients to body and removes waste
what does an artery do?
moves blood away from the heart
what does a vein do?
moves blood to the heart (very much back to the heart)
what is a capillary?
connects arteries and veins
what is hemoglobin?
a protein in red blood cells that binds to oxygen
what is your pacemaker?
group of cells in the heart that make the heartbeat
what is the sac that holds the heart in place/protects it?
pericardium
what is the pericardium?
the sac that holds the heart in place/protects it
what makes your heart beat?
pacemaker/group of cells in the heart that make the heartbeat
what is the job of the atriums?
pump blood to the ventricles
what is the job of the ventricles?
pump blood to arteries and the rest of the body (right: lungs/pulmonary artery, left: aorta/body)
what is the biggest artery in the body?
aorta
what does cpr stand for?
cardio pulmonary resuscitation
what is the difference between heart rate and blood pressure
heart rate is bpm (beats per minute) and blood pressure is how strong you blood is/the pressure
what is healthy blood pressure?
120/80
what is the systolic measure?
pressure in your arteries when your ventricles contract
what is the diastolic measure?
pressure in your arteries when your ventricles rests (between beats)
what are the four parts of blood?
red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma, platelets
what does a red blood cell do?
transports oxygen
what does a white blood cell do?
protects body from infection
what does plasma do?
the liquid part of blood
what do platelets do?
clot blood
what is hemophilia?
blood doesnt properly clot
what is anemia?
not enough red blood cells
what is hypertension?
high blood pressure
what is atherosclerosis?
buildup of plaque in the arteries
what is a heart attack?
blockage of blood flow to your heart
what is coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG)?
It is necessary if you have coronary artery disease (CAD), the narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries. It helps lower the risk of a heart attack. It is performed by taking blood vessels from other parts of the body, moving them to where the block one is, and creating a new blood flow.
