Cardiovascular System Flashcards
What is the function of the heart?
Circulate oxygen, nutrients, hormones, heat and waste products….
Regulate pH, body temp & water content of cells.
Protects against blood loss (clotting) & foreign bodies.
Define: pericardium
Double layered serous membrane, protects and lubricates.
Define: myocardium
Thickest layer of heart tissue
Define: endocardium
Inner lining between myocardium and chambers of the heart
Right side of heart receives?
Deoxygenated blood
Left side of the heart receives?
Oxygenated blood
What separates the two halves of the heart?
The septum
What supplies the heart muscles with blood?
Coronary vessels
Define: systole
Heart contracts
Define: diastole
Heart relaxes & refills with blood
Define: cardiac output
Amount of blood that leaves the heart
Define: shock
Adaptation to an extreme cardiovascular insult (sudden blood loss (hypovolaemia)).
If there is a lack of circulating volume how does the body respond?
A huge increase in both stroke volume (contractility) and heart rate
What device measures electrical conduction in the heart?
Electrocardiogram (ECG)
What is the largest artery in the body?
Aorta
