cardiovascular system Flashcards

Q

what are arteries?

A

Arteries. The arteries (red) carry oxygen and nutrients away from your heart, to your body’s tissues. The veins (blue) take oxygen-poor blood back to the heart. Arteries begin with the aorta, the large artery leaving the heart. They carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart to all of the body’s tissues.

Q

what are blood vessels?

A

A tube through which the blood circulates in the body. Blood vessels include a network of arteries, arterioles, capillaries, venules, and veins.

Q

what are capillaries?

A

Capillaries are small, thin blood vessels that connect the arteries and the veins. Their thin walls allow oxygen, nutrients, carbon dioxide and waste products to pass to and from the tissue cells.

Q

what is the heart?

A

The heart is a muscular organ about the size of a fist, located just behind and slightly left of the breastbone. The heart pumps blood through the network of arteries and veins called the cardiovascular system.

Q

what is systemic circulation?

A

The systemic circulation provides the functional blood supply to all body tissue. It carries oxygen and nutrients to the cells and picks up carbon dioxide and waste products. Systemic circulation carries oxygenated blood from the left ventricle, through the arteries, to the capillaries in the tissues of the body.

Q

what are veins?

A

What Are Veins? ‌Your blood loses oxygen as it travels through your arteries. Veins carry the blood back to your heart to absorb more oxygen. Your veins usually hold about 75% of all the blood flowing through your body.‌ Your largest veins are the superior and inferior vena cava.
