Cardiovascular Disease Flashcards
What is coronary heart disease?
When the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart get blocked by a build up of fatty materials
What does a build up of fatty acids cause?
Causes the arteries to be blocked therefore blood flow is restricted
What do stents do?
They keep the arteries open making sure blood can pass trough
What do stents reduce the chance of?
Heart attacks
What are risks of having a stent put in?
Infection
Blood clots (thrombosis)
What do statins do?
Reduce cholesterol in the blood
What can happen if you have too much cholesterol?
Can cause fatty deposits to form inside the arteries, this can lead to coronary heart disease
What is a benefit of an artificial heart?
Less likely to be rejected than a donor heart
What are some disadvantages of artificial hearts?
Infection during surgery
They don’t work as well as a natural heart
What are risks with an artificial heart?
Motor could stop
Blood doesn’t flow smoothly (could cause blood clots or stroke)
What can artificial blood do?
Keep you alive in an emergency
