Cardiovascular and Pulmonary: Resistance Exercise Training Flashcards
1
Q
Goals and Outcomes
A
- Decrease cardiac demands during ADL’s
2
Q
Patient Criteria for Resistance Training: Post MI
A
- Permitted if it remains under 70% max HR or 5 MET’s for 6 weeks post MI
- Be cautious of Valsalva
3
Q
Patient Criteria for Resistance Training: Cardiac Surgery
A
- Lower extremity Resistance Training can be initiated immediately
- Upper extremity resistance should be avoided until soft tissue and boney healing has taken place
4
Q
Patient Criteria for Resistance Training: Post Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty
A
Can be initiated with a
- Minimum of 3 weeks post procedure
- Minimum of 2 weeks consistent participation in cardiac rehab
5
Q
Patient Criteria for Resistance Training: No evidence of the following conditions
A
- Congestive Heart Failure
- Dysrhythmias
- Severe Valvular Disease
- Uncontrolled hypertension
- Unstable symptoms
6
Q
Exercise Prescription
A
- Start with low resistance
- One set of 10-15 repetitions
- RPE should range from 11-13 correlated with hemodynamic response to activity
- Rate pressure product maintained within the prescribed parameters
