Cardiovascular Flashcards
1
Q
Differentiate b/w macrovascular & microvascular w/ e.g.
A
- Macro: > 0.1mm in diameter e.g.muscular, elastic artery, muscular veins
- Micro: exchange b/w vessels & tissues e.g. arterioles, capillaries, post-capillary venules
2
Q
List BV & their general function
A
- arteries > withstand pressure
- arterioles > distibute
- capillaries > exchange
- Venules > drain
- Veins > reservoir
3
Q
What does tunica intima contain?
A
- Endothelium: simple squamous epith.
- fenestrations
- basal lamina
- Subendothelial layer: Loose CT, ~smooth muscle cells, internal elastic lamina (IEL)
4
Q
What does tunica media contain?
A
- circumferential smooth muscle cells
- Elastin, reticular fibres & proteoglycans in b/w cells
- external elastic lamina (EEL)
5
Q
What does tunica adventitia contain?
A
- longitudinal collagen fibres
- some elastic fibres
6
Q
What’s the vasa vasorum & vasa nervosum?
A
- Vasorum: smaller BV in TM & TA of LARGE vessels > provide nutrients
- Nervosum: BV (arteries) supply blood to nerves
7
Q
DIfferentiate elastic artery & muscular artery & arteriole from their obvious features
A
- Elastic: Thick TI, thin TA, lots of elastic fibres in tunics,
- Muscular: Thin TA, thick TA, prominent IEL & EEL, TM less elastic
- Arteriole: Thin TI, TM, TA, no IEL & EEL
