Cardiomyopathy, Myocarditis and Pericarditis Flashcards
Myocarditis symptoms
Varies a lot mild fatigue palpitations chest pain breathlessness
myocarditis clinical signs
soft heart sounds
prominent 3rd heart sound
tachycardia
pericardial rub-uncommon
myocarditis treatment
normal heals on its own
bet rest and avoiding exercise
Clinical signs of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
Double apex beat jerky carotid pulse aortic systolic murmur mitral regurgitation fourth heart sound
treatment for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
lifestyle alteration-avoid heavy exercise and dehydration
If symptomatic then give beta blockers and calcium channel blockers
Main causes of pericarditis
bacterial, post MI, perforation, dissection of proximal aorta, neoplasia
symptoms of pericarditis
Pleuritic chest pain which changes with posture (worse leaning back/lying down. Better leaning forward)
fever
clinical signs of pericarditis
pericardial rub
raised JVP suggests effusion
low bp
muffled heart sounds
investigations for pericarditis
ecg
echo
tropin may be high if myocardium involved in infection
what is tamponade
where pericardial effusion is large enough to cause heart to not pump as efficiently do to squishing it
symptoms of pericardial effusion
obvious symptoms-fatige, dyspnoea, dizzy with low BP
may have chest pain
Clinical features of pericardial effusions
low bp on inspiration, JVP raised, low BP, pericardial rub, muffled HS
treatment for pericardial effusion
drainage
treatment of bacterial pericarditis
drainage of any effusion
antibiotics
treatment of viral pericarditis
no/very limited (watch and see)
