Cardio Vascular System Flashcards
Red Blood Cells
Carries oxygen to all the cells in the body
White Blood Cells
Protects the body from infection by destroying microbes
Platelets
Causes blood clots when blood vessels need repair
Plasma
Carries all the different components such as sugars, salts, hormones, proteins and carbon dioxide
Arteries
Carries blood away from the heart; they have thick, muscular walls and carry under high pressure
Veins
Carries blood towards the heart; they have thin elastic walls and carry blood under low pressure
Capillaries
Carries blood past cells; they are only one cell layer thick to easily allow chemicals into the cells
List the order the blood travels through the heart
Vena cava, right atrium, right ventricle, pulmonary artery, lungs(oxygenated), pulmonary vein, left atrium, left ventricle, aorta, rest of the body
Is the pulmonary artery located above or below the pulmonary vein
Above
Describe the two loops in the double circulatory system
1) Carries deoxygenated blood to the right side of the heart and then to the lungs to get oxygenated
2) Carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left side of the heart, and then to the rest of the body
Why do humans need double circulatory systems
To make sure our cells are provided with oxygenated blood and not a mixture of oxygenated and deoxygenated
