A

MEDICAL EMERGENCY

  • Accumulation of blood, fluid, pus clots or gas in pericardial space
  • =reduced ventricular filling
  • =haemodynamic compromise

AETIOLOGY: Cardiac Tamponade

A
  • Malignancy (esp. breast/lung)*
  • MI
  • Aortic Dissection
  • Infection
  • Connective Tissue: SLE, RA
  • CKD

Other non-specific

  • Trauma
  • Drugs: hydralazine, isoniazid
  • Iatrogenic
  • Radiation

CLINCIAL FEATURES: Cardiac Tamponade

  • Dyspnoea
  • Tachycardia
  • Hypotension
  • Muffled Heart Souds
  • Increased JVP
  • Pulsus Paradoxus
    • >10mmHg decrease in systolic BP on inspiration
