Cardiac surgeries Flashcards
What is an intra aortic balloon pump (IABP) used for?
Reduces myocardial oxygen demand, therefore increasing CO
When does an IABP deflate?
systole (reducing afterload)
When does an IABP inflate?
diastole (increases blood flow to coronary arteries
What can an IABP be used to treat?
Cardiogenic shock
What is coronary revascularization (CABG)?
It is a palliative treatment where new vessels are used to transport blood between aorta to distal area of occlusion.
What is the most common vessel used in CABG?
internal mammary artery
Who would CABG surgery benefit (prolong life)?
- -Left main CAD
- -3 vessel disease
What is a MIDCABG?
It is a minimally invasive bypass grafting. The # of grafts are restircted.
What is OPCABG?
Off pump CABG surgery to reduce length of stay
What is a patient at risk for after a OPCABG?
stroke within 48-72 hours post op
What does an LVAD do?
Supports left side of heart (LA and femoral artery)
What does RVAD do?
supports the right side of heart (RA and PA cannulated)
What is Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)?
Mechanical circulatory support for severe acute respiratory/cardiac failure.
What is the action of ECMO?
Deoxygenated blood diverted from vascular system, it is oxygenated outside of body, then returned to vascular system.
What does a VV ECMO support?
Respiratory only
