Cardiac pathology Flashcards

Q
What histo or cytopathological features are pathognomonic for amyloidosis?
A
Amyloid fibrils are rigid, nonbranching structures, 7 to 10 nanometers in diameter, with a characteristic appearance on electron microscopy. Affinity for Congo red staining, which binds to the β-pleated sheets, produces the pathognomonic “apple-green” birefringence when visualized under polarized light microscopy

Q
What histopathological features do you expect to seen in endocardial fibroelastosis
A
Endocardial fibroelastosis is characterised by diffuse fibrous and elastic endocardial infiltration and thickening in the absence of other cardiac lesions, necrosis or inflammation
