Cardiac Glycosides Flashcards
Action of Cardiac Glycosides
Positive Inotrope & Peripheral Vasoconstriction
Mechanism of Action of Cardiac Glycosides
Inhibiting Na+/K+ ATPase pump =
Increasing intracellular Na+, decreasing the Ca+ pumped out and in turn the intracellular Ca+ = Increased contraction
Direct affect in a-adrenoreceptors = vasoconstriction and increased peripheral resistance
Administration of Cardiac Glycosides
Oral
Indications of Cardiac Glycosides
Heart Failure
Supraventricular Arrhythmias
Contraindications of Cardiac Glycosides
Heart Block
Hypokalaemia associated with use of diuretics
Side Effects of Cardiac Glycosides
Arrhythmias Anorexia Nausea & Vomiting Visual Disturbances Abdominal Pain and Diarrhoea
A Dangerous Drug Interaction of Cardiac Glycosides
Glycosides + Loop Diuretics = Potassium Loss Arrhythmias
Cardiac Glycosides
Digoxin and Digitoxin
Cardiac Glycosides in CCF
Improve symptoms but do not improve outcome
