Cardiac Cycle Flashcards
What is the cardia cycle
Period of contraction (systole) and relaxation (diastole)
1st period of systole
Blood returning to the heart flows into the atria and ventricles
2nd period of systole
When ventricles and 70% full, atria will contract
What is atria contracting called
Atrial systole
Increasing pressure in the atria does what?
Forces blood into ventricles
3rd stage of systole
As ventricles contract, ventricular pressure exceeds atrial pressure and AV valves close to prevent back flow
AV vales closing
first heart sound
AV stands for
AtrioVentricular
4th stage of systole
With both sets of heart valves closed, pressure rapidly builds in the contracting ventricles
Isovolumetric contraction
contracting ventricles
5th stage of systole
When ventricular pressure exceeds blood pressure in the aorta, the aortic valve opens and blood is released into the aorta
1st stage diastole
As blood exits the ventricle and travels down the aorta, ventricular pressure falls
2nd stage diastole
When ventricular pressure drops below aortic pressure, the aortic valve closes to prevent back flow
Aortic valves closing
(second heart sound)
3rd stage diastole
Ventricular pressure drops below the atrial pressure. AV valve opens. Blood can flow from atria to ventricle
