Arteries Flashcards
Function of arteries 1
Delivers oxygen rich blood to every tissue and organ
Function of arteries 2
Ensures proper nutrient and waste exchange
How many layers
- Tunica intima, media, and adventits
Tunica intima
Innermost layers. Reduces friction
Tunica media
Thickest layer. Regulates blood flow. Smooth muscles, elastic fibers
Tunica adventitis
Outermost layer. Strength and support
Tunica adventitis is composed of…
connective tissue. anchors the artery to surrounding structures
Smooth muscles
contacts and relaxes. regulates blood flow through vasoconstriction and vasodilation
Elastic fibers
stretch and recoil with each heartbeat. Assist blood propulsion
Blood Flow
Pulsatile. surging with each heartbeat. Due to pumping action of the heart
Vasoconstriction
Smooth muscles CONTRACT and narrows the artery. Reduces blood flow to specific areas
Vasodilation
Relaxation of smooth muscle. WIDENS artery. Increases blood flow to specific areas
Pulse
Result of pulsating blood flow against arterial wall with each heartbeat
Pulse can be felt where and why?
On neck or wrist. Measuring pulse is indicator of heart health
Stroke volume
Volume of blood pumped out of the left ventricle of heart with each beat
