carbonyls Flashcards
carbonyls refers to molecules with which two functional groups
Aldehyde and ketone (C=0)
which test is used to carbonyls
and positive result
Bradys reagent(2,4-DNP)
gives a yellow/orange precipitate
what colour is Bradys reagent
Orange solution
which carbonyl can be oxidised using acidified K2Cr207
Aldehyde can be oxidised to form a carboxylic acid with no bi product
what change is seen when a carbonyl is oxidised using acidified K2Cr2O7 and heat
orange solution to green solution
what test can be used to distinguish between ketone and aldehyde carbonyls
give result(s)
Tollins reagent is used
silver mirror (silver precipitate) is formed when Aldehyde is present. Ketone does not have visible change
How can you determine what carbonyl molecule is present in a sample
Bradys reagent test produces an orange/yellow precipitate which is a 2,4-dnp derivitave.
This solid can be used in a melting point test and compared against known malting points to determine what carbonyl has reacted to produce it. Boiling point can also be considered.
