6
Q

what test can be used to distinguish between ketone and aldehyde carbonyls
give result(s)

A

Tollins reagent is used
silver mirror (silver precipitate) is formed when Aldehyde is present. Ketone does not have visible change

Q

How can you determine what carbonyl molecule is present in a sample

A

Bradys reagent test produces an orange/yellow precipitate which is a 2,4-dnp derivitave.

This solid can be used in a melting point test and compared against known malting points to determine what carbonyl has reacted to produce it. Boiling point can also be considered.
