Carbon Dioxide Transport/Acid Base Balance- Flashcards
What are the three form in which CO2 is carried in the blood?
- Dissolved CO2
- Carbaminohemoglobin
- Bicarbonate (Quantitatively most important)
What is Carbaminohemoglobin?
CO2 bound to the terminal amino groups of hemoglobin(May also be bound to plasma proteins like Albumin)
What effect does CO2 binding to hemoglobin have?
Reduces its affinity for oxygen and causes a RIGHT shift of the O2-hemoglobin dissociation curve.
What is the Haldane effect?
The effect of less O2 being bound to hemoglobin increasing its affinity for CO2
What percentage of CO2 in blood is carried as HCO3?
> 90%
What is the enzyme responsible for the conversion of CO2 to its transport forms H2CO3 which dissociates into H+ and -HCO3
Carbonic Anhydrase (Catalyzes both forward and reverse steps)
What substance buffers the H+ ions in red blood cells?
Deoxyhemoglobin
What is the anion exchange protein responsible for the Cl- HCO3- exchange?
The BAND THREE PROTEIN
Where is HCO3- transported to the lungs?
In the Plasma of venous blood
