Carbohydrates-monosaccharides Flashcards
What elements do all carbohydrates consist of
C, H, O
what is a monosaccharide?
a simple sugar,
general formula
(CH20)n
What forms can monosaccharides exist in
straight chains , cyclic forms or ring forms
what are some
examples of monosaccharides?
galactose ,fructose,
glucose, ribose and
deoxyribose.
What two functions do carbohydrates have?
structural molecules and energy stores
How are
monosaccharides classified?
based on the number of carbons they have: hexose=6 carbons, pentose= 5 carbons triose=3 carbons ect.
Draw and name the two structural isomers of glucose
what are the two sugars of DNA
Deoxyribose and ribose(they are not structural isomers)
What is the difference between deoxyribose and ribose?
deoxyribose has one less oxygen on its second carbon
Draw the structure of deoxyribose and ribose
