Carbohydrates-disaccharides Flashcards

1
Q

How is a disaccharide formed?

A

formed when two
monosaccharide molecules are joined by a glycosidic bond via a condensation reaction: Two OH groups line up next to each other which removes a H20 molecule, which leaves an O atom=glycosidic bond.

Q

How are disaccharides broken down?

A

via a hydrolysis reaction which breaks them down into two monosaccharides, the addition of water(provides an -OH group and a H atom) is required to break the glycosidic bond.
