Carbohydrates Flashcards
What is the function of carbohydrates?
quick fuel, short term energy storage in all organisms, structural role in woody plants, cell-to-cell recognition,
What is the structure of carbohydrates?
H-C-OH, two to one ratio of H:O
What is a monosaccharide?
simple sugar (type of carbohydrate)
What is glucose?
Hexose sugar found in our blood, immediate source of energy
What are some monosaccharides?
glucose, fructose, galactose
What is a disaccharide?
two monosaccharides joined together by a dehydration reaction
What is a polysaccharide?
many glucose subunits joined together to form long polymers
What is starch?
Large storage form of glucose in plants
What is glycogen?
Large storage form of glucose in animals
What is cellulose?
structural component of plant cell walls, NOT DIGEST-ABLE because of alternating position of linking oxygen atoms
What are some polysaccharides?
starch, glycogen, cellulose, chitin
What are some disaccharides?
maltose, lactose
