Carbohydrates Flashcards
What are the three primary function of a carbohydrate?
Energy source
Energy storage
Structural
What type of bonds do they form?
1,4 glycosidic or 1,6 glycosidic.
What is the difference between amylose and amylopectin?
Amylose- joined together by 1,4 glycosidic bonds.
Amylopectin- Joined together by 1, 6 glycosidic bonds.
what is the main difference in Starch and Glycogen?
Glycogen- shorter amylose chain and more branches.
What are the similarities between starch and glycogen?
Do not dissolve
do not affect water potential
The hold glucose molecules in chains that can be easily broken.
What is the structure of cellulose?
Hydrogen bonds between chains to form microfibrils. They bond together to form microfibrils which are woven in layers to form structures, such as cell walls.
