Amino acids and Proteins Flashcards
What bond joins amino acids together?
peptide bond
What biological functions are proteins included in?
Structural uses
Membrane carriers and pores
All enzymes are proteins
Many hormones are proteins
what is the primary structure?
The sequence of amino acids that make up a protein.
What is the secondary structure?
Formation of a 3D structure when a chain of amino acids coil or folds.
What are the two secondary structure formed?
Beta pleated sheets and alpha helix
What is the quaternary structure?
When a protein polymerises and forms a bigger protein.
Where is collagen found?
Skin, mines, cartilage, tendons, teeth and the walls of blood vessel. Structural protein.
What is collagen made up of?
3 polypeptide chains, each in a shape of a helix. Form a rope. Contain cross-links which form fibrils.
What is haemoglobin made up of/
4 polypeptide bonds. Wrapped around a haem group.
What type of chains do haemoglobin contain?
two alpha chains and two beta chains.
