carbohydrates Flashcards
1
Q
give two ways which the structures of starch is similar to cellulose
A
- both are enpolysaccharides
- monomers are linked by a glycocidic bond
- contains glucose, carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
2
Q
the question about the milk, lactase and beads
A
- it is a continuous reaction
- beads can be reused
- enzymes is more stable due to a controlled environment
- no need to remove milk
- avoid end -point inhibition
3
Q
explain difference in the structure of the starch molecules and the cellulose molecules show in in the diagram above
A
starch is a POLYMER of alpha glucose whilst cellulose is a polymer of beta glucose
also hydroxyl and hydrogen groups on carbon 1 are inverted
4
Q
explain hoe cellulose molecules are adopted for their function in plant cells
A
cellulose molecules are LONG and STRAIGHT CHAINS that are linked by HYDROGEN BONDS
these hydrogen bonds are grouped together to form fibrils
which provides strength rigidity to the cell wall
