Capital Punishment Flashcards
RETRIBUTION
This means that criminals really need to pay for their crime.
REFORM
This means that punishment should teach the criminal about what they have done wrong, so they change.
Protection
Punishment needs to be about protecting other people who could be victims of the criminal.
Deterrence
Punishment should be SO bad that no one wants to do the crime.
Inhumane or humane?
Is there a difference between killing someone legally and murdering someone?
Does it make sense to show killing is wrong by killing?
Are all methods of Capital punishment inhumane? Are some worse than others?

Rejection of CP
-One of the main objections to Capital Punishment is the execution of the innocent.
-Derek Bentley was posthumously acquitted of the murder charges against him.
-He was hanged in 1953 for the murder of a policeman at the age of 19.
-Ruth Ellis was the last woman to be hanged in the UK- executed 1955.
-In the years that followed it was shown that she suffered years of abuse at the hands of her father and also her lover, David Blakely, who she killed.
Angel Diaz
-August 15, 1990, Angel Diaz, age nineteen, was sentenced in the Bronx for the murder of an Israeli immigrant who had employed one of Diaz’s friends.
-After strangling the man with a shoelace and stabbing him, Diaz and four friends donned Halloween masks to rob, beat and gang rape the man’s wife and sixteen year old daughter.
-The women were then sexually tortured while the murdered man’s three year old daughter watched from her crib.
-Angel Diaz already had been convicted of burglary four times before he was sixteen years old. Diaz’s lawyer, Paul Auerbach, said that Diaz was an honest boy forced by poverty to do bad things.
