Capacitors 1 - Capacitance Flashcards
What is a capacitor?
A capacitor is an electrical components which can be used to store electrical charge in a circuit.
What happens when a capacitor is connected, and then disconnected from a power source in a circuit?
When it is connected, the capacitor will store electrical energy.
When it is disconnected, it will dissipate the stored energy, and pass it to the rest of the components.
How do capacitors help in electronic devices?
They are used to maintain power supply while batteries are being charged. This prevents loss of information in volatile memory.
How do capacitors store potential energy?
They store potential energy in an electric field, via a potential difference.
How do batteries store potential energy?
They store potential energy as chemical energy.
Which stores more charge, a capacitor or a battery?
A capacitor stores relatively little charge, whereas a battery stores large amounts of charge.
Which charges and discharges faster, a capacitor or a battery?
A capacitor charges and discharges quicker than a
