Cap 6 Piston Enigne Lubrification And Cooling Flashcards
Engine lubrification
Take part of engine heat
Engine oil secondary funtcion
~absorbs heat and disperses it to atosphere
~Removes carbon deposits and metal flakes ,which are trapped by a filter
~protects the components from corrosion
~hydraulic operations ,operates valve gear and variable pitch
Oil viscosity
The viscosity of the oil is labelled on the container ,like 30w ,10w40
Bigger the number ,the less the viscosity change with temperature.
Therefore a multi grade (10w30) oil behaves like an SAE 10 oil in winter and an SAE 30 when warm (100 C)
Always oil of specification from unopened container.
New petrol engines can have different oil unitl few hours of running in
Dry sump
Scavenge pump has to have great volume capacity than the pressure pump
Dry sump
Dry sump»_space; need a separate oil container, where oil is feed to a temp gauge first, then it goes through a NRV to the SUCTION FILTER,then through PRESSURE PUMP (if pressure is to high its released through a PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE),then from the pump goes to PRESSURE FILTER (if gets clogged there is a filter bypass),from there it goes to the low pressure oil camshaft through a PRV to reduce the oil pressure ,another part goes to the high oil bearings (60/70PSI) ,then oil is collected in the engine sum due to gravity, which then goes to the SCAVENGE FILTER,then SCAVENGE PUMP (high capacity) to the Magnetic chip detector ,then is COOLED DOWN through an OIL COOLER (if the oil is already cool enough then it passes through the ANTI SURGE VALE instead of the oil cooler directly to the OIL TANK .oil tank has de-aerator plate to take air bubbles away and. HOT WELL at the bottom of the oil container to have much warm oil quickly.
Combination oil and pressure to understand the engine is going to fail
Worse scenario is high oil temp and low oil pressure
Liquid cooling
A thermostatic valve can detect if the cooling temp is high if so it willi send the cooling liquid to the coolant heat exchanger to cool it down
Cowl flap
“Cowl flap”open increases cooling flow if closed reduces for like low power and open for full power
Wet sump
Doesn’t have an oil tank but is stored inside the engine itself
