CAP 12 GAS TURBINE DESIGNS Flashcards
Single spool turbo jet
One drive shaft the drives the whole compressers
Single spool centrifugal turbojet
Centrifugal air fed to the chambers
Twin spool Axi centrifugal
Fan and compressor is connected to one set of turbine and then air passes to the centrifugal ,which then goes to reverse flow combustion chamber (connected to other turbine ).
Single spol axial flow turbojet
Only efficent for high speeed flight
Small frontal area produces low drag
No commercial airlines uses this design bc it is inefficient and noisy
Spool: an assembly comprising a compressor and turbine connected by shaft
Axial flow : the passage of air through the engine directly from front to rear along the egines axis
Twin spool by pass enigne
By pass ratio is calculated by
Total inlet air
Core air flow
By pass flow= total flow -core flow
Measuring staton
P0 T0»_space;at the inlet
P3 T3»_space;at the diffuser
P7 T7» at the exhaust (jet pipe)
N1 the most forward spool pressure compressor ,
N2 second spool pressure compressor
Turboprop
Lp Centrifugal compressor ,hp centrifugal compressor ,reverse flow combustion chamber ,hp turbine,LP turbine, power turbine drives the reduction gearbox
Powering up a free turbine turbo prop
Powering up this happens:
Fuel flow >up Turbine GT >up GAS generator> up RPM >up Torque> up Prop rpm>constant Thrust>up
Tuboprop and turbo shaft
~Centrifugal compressors are ofthe used to reduce length
~most of the energy is extracted to produce torque
~torque is usually indicated as a percentage of maximum torque
~the overall contribution of torque shaft horsepower and residual thrust can be measured in equivalent shaft horse power
Engine (king air)
INTAKE IS AT THE BACK AND EXHAUST IN THE FRONT.
SO YOU HAVE SHORTER AXEL CONNECTING THE REDUCTION GEAR BOX WITH THE FREE POWER TURBINE
Jet engines vs piston engines
Volume and pressure
Jet engines»constant pressure
Piston engine»_space;constant volume
