Cancer Flashcards
What is cancer cause by?
Uncontrolled growth and division of cells which result in the formation of a tumour (mass of cells).
What are the two types of tumour?
Benign or Malignant
What is a benign tumour? (2)
A tumour which grows in one place until there’s no more room instead of invading other bodily tissues. It usually isn’t dangerous and isn’t cancerous.
What is a malignant tumour? (3)
A tumour which grows and spreads to healthy tissues, cells breaking off and spreading to parts of the body through the blood. These cells then invade other tissues and form secondary tumours. They are dangerous and cancerous.
Who can develop cancer?
Anyone.
How have cancer survival rates increased? (3)
Medical advancements such as improved treatment, early diagnosis’s and increased screenings.
Smoking (5)
Linked to lung, mouth, bowel, stomach and cervical cancer.
Obesity (3)
Linked to bowel, liver and kidney cancer.
UV exposure
UV radiation increases the chance of skin cancer, so people who live in sunny places, work outside or frequently use sunbeds are at risk.
Viral infection
Some viruses increase chances of cancer such as hepatitis increases the risk of liver cancer.
Genetics
Faulty genes can link to cancer such as mutated BRCA genes have been linked to breast/ ovarian cancer.
