Camplyobacter, Helicobacter, Listeria Flashcards
Classify Camplyobacter
Curved gram negative rods, microaerophilic
What is the reservoir of campylobacter?
Farm animals
Besides diarrhea, what kind of complications may Camplyobacter have?
Autoimmune complications
Does campylobacter colonize the small or large intestine?
Both!
Is the diarrhea caused by campylobacter secretory or bloody?
Bloody due to destructive intracellular infection
After being infected with campylobacter, a patient suffers bacteremia from this bug. What complications may follow bacteremia?
Guillain- Barre, reactive arthritis, HUS, meningitis, vascular infection
How do you diagnose campylobacter infection?
Microaerophilic culture
Gram stain of fecal smear
Sigmoidoscopy
How do you treat campylobacter infection?
Rehydration, add antibiotics if predisposed to complications
What enzyme does H. pylori possess?
Urease
How does H. pylori cause a peptic ulcer?
Colonizes stomach, irritates stomach lining, attracts a massive inflammatory infiltrate, destroys local cells–> peptic ulcer
What condition does a peptic ulcer predispose you to?
Gastric cancer and MALT lymphoma
How do you diagnose peptic ulcer caused by H. pylori?
Scope, urea breath test, PCR, biopsy
How do you treat peptic ulcer caused by H. pylori?
Triple therapy–> trios of antibiotics
Classify Listeria
Gram positive rod, beta hemolytic
Does listeria grow better in the warm or cold?
Cold
