Camera Settings Flashcards
What’s shutter speed?
1/30 means the shutter open for one thirtyth of a second. Effects motion blur. Sports photographers would shoot high. Blurry lights would be low.
What’s the 180 degree shutter rule?
Bottom number of shutter speed setting = frame rate x2
Eg:
Frame rate = 24fps
Shutter speed = 1/48 (or closest camera will get.
Frame rate = 60 fps
Shutter speed = 1/120
What does aperture do?
Let’s in light
What kind of f stop is a small amount of aperture light?
Higher f stop
What kind of f stop is a large amount of aperture light?
Lower f stop
True or false the larger the number the smaller the aperture?
True
What’s the depth of field?
The amount of background in focus.
The wider your aperture the lower your what?
F stop (lots of light in) and the shallower your depth of field will be.
The narrower your aperture the higher the what will be?
F stop - (deeper depth of field).
How do you get a blurrier (shallow) background?
Lower your f stop
As well as the f stop what else impacts how blurry the background is?
How close or far you are from subject
Does lowering the f stop make it brighter?
Yes
Why would you want a product to have a blurry background?
To make the product the star of the show. Make sure you don’t go too low. The product has to be fully in focus. Sometimes you might not want the background to be really blurry eg if you want ti show tiles
What’s ISO?
Sensitivity to light
A high ISO is?
Brighter (also noisier.)
A low ISO is?
Darker
Why do you put the ISO as low as possible?
To reduce noise
What number ISO should you try not to go higher than?
1000 (but sometimes you will have too)
What’s the zebra feature on a camera?
Shows what’s overexposed
Is it better to be over or under exposed?
Under exposed (won’t lose detail)
What does a warmer and cooler temperature look like?
Cool = blue light
Warm = orange light
What’s Kelvin?
Kelvin (K) = warmth of a light source.
What’s a lower kelvin value?
Warmer orange light. Eg flame is 1800k
White balance would be 1800k
What’s a higher kelvin value?
Cool blue light eg 8000k is the sky
Why is it good to know the colour temperature of your lights?
So you can set your white balance to that
What order should you set your camera?
1) Set frame rate - eg 60fps
2) set shutter speed - 1/2x framerate = 1/120
3) Set aperture - depending on how blurry you want. Lower f stop is blurry. Higher f stop is focused
4) ISO - to properly expose image. Higher - brighter image. Darker - lower image.
5) White balance - set to kelvin (value of lights)
