Q

Calculation of freight:
(a) How many tonnes of machinery in cases (SF = 3.10), Canned fruits (SF = 1.95) and Granite Slabs (SF = 0.48)
can fit in a cargo hold of dimensions 12.5 m x 9m x 6.3 m. It is given that broken stowage for each cargo is
14.5%, 7% and 11.2% respectively.
(b) If the load density of cargo hold tank top is given as 8.5 t/m2, find whether there
should be any height restriction for loading.

A

(a) Volume of cargo hold = L x B x H
Volume occupied = SF x BS
Volume of cargo that can fit in the hold = Volume of cargo hold / Volume occupied

(b) Weight of cargo exerted on the tank top = Volume of cargo that can fit in the hold / (L x B)
Max. cargo within the hold = PLD x L x B
Height restriction = (Max. cargo within the hold x Volume occupied) / Tank top area (L x B)
