C9 Crude Oils And Fuels Flashcards
What are alkanes
Homologous series of saturated hydrocarbons with the general formula CnH2n+2
Molecular formula of methane
CH4
Molecular formula of ethane
C2H6
Molecular formula of propane
C3H8
Molecular formula of butane
C4H10
What is a crude oil
A mixture of many different compounds
Why is crude oil not a very useful as a product itself
It has too many substances in it
What is flammability
How easily something sets on fire
What is viscosity
How easily it flows
What is fractional distillation
Crude oil seperated into useful fractions depending on the boiling point of the numerous substances it contains it goes from high temperatures and lowers as you go up
How does fractional distillation work
Crude oil is heated in a furnace and passed into the bottom of the fractionating column. The vapour mixture given off rises up the column and the different fractions condense out at different parts of the column
What is volatility
The tendency to turn into a gas
What is combustion
An oxidation chemical reaction where energy is released from fuels
What is produced when hydrocarbon fuels react with oxygen
Carbon dioxide and water.
What happens when there is a positive test for water in combustion
Blue cobalt chloride paper turns PINK also turns white anhydrous (dry) Copper sulfate BLUE
