C9 Flashcards
Define a hydrocarbon
An organic compound containing only carbon and hydrogen
Define a Fraction
Hydrocarbons with similar boiling points separated from crude oil
Define distillation
Separation of a liquid from a mixture by evaporation followed by condensation
Define an alkane
Saturated hydrocarbon with a general formula of Cn2n+2
Define saturated hydrocarbons
A hydrocarbon where all the carbon bonds are single bonds
What is the definition of flammability
Easily ignited and capable of burning rapidly
What is the definition of fractional distillation
Separation of many miscible liquids by heating at different boiling points in a fractioning column
What is complete combustion
Combustion continued until no further with oxygen is possible for example the combustion of alkanes in oxygen to form CO2 and H20
What is incomplete combustion
Burning of carbon based fuels in limited oxygen forming CO
What is cracking?
Large hydrocarbons are broken down into smaller more useful molecules which can be used. Hydrocarbon vapour is passed over a catalyst and then it reacts
What is an unsaturated hydrocarbon?
A hydrocarbon with one or more double or triple bonds
What is an alkene
Unsaturated hydrocarbon which contains C = C bonds. General formula of CnH2n
