C8: Rates of Reaction Flashcards
How can the rate of chemical reaction be found?
Measuring the quantity of a reactant used or the quantity of product formed overtime or the quantity of product formed over time.
What factors affect the rate of chemical reaction?
Concentrations of reactant, pressure of reacting gases, surface area of solid reactants, temperature and presence of catalysts
What does collision theory state?
Chemical reactions can occur only when reacting particles collide with each other and with sufficient energy.
What factors increase the rate of frequent collisions?
Increased concentration of reactants, increased surface area, increased temperature and increased pressure
How do catalysts increase the rate of reaction?
They provide and alternate pathway which has a lower activation energy
What would happen if the concentration of a reactant is increased?
More products will be formed until equilibrium is reached.
What would happen if the concentration of a product is decreased?
More reactants will react until equilibrium is reached
What two things would happen if the temperature of a system in equilibrium is increased?
The products increase for an endothermic reaction and the products decreased for an exothermic reaction
What two things would happen if the temperature of a system in equilibrium is decreased?
The products decrease for an endothermic reaction and the products increase for an exothermic reaction
What would happen if the pressure of gases of a system in equilibrium is increased?
The position will shift to the side with smaller number of molecules (as shown from symbol equation)
What would happen if the pressure of gases of a system in equilibrium is decreased?
The position will shift to the side with larger number of molecules (as shown from symbol equation)
