What is a pure substance?
A single element or compound not mixed with any other substance
How can you test that something is a pure substance?
It has a fixed boiling point (a mixture would boil over a range of temperatures)
What is a formulation?
A mixture designed to have particular properties by carefully mixing exact quantities of different substances
In chromatography how can you tell if something is pure?
It would only produce one spot
What is the equation to calculate the Rf value?
Rf = distance moved by substance / distance moved by solvent
What is the test for hydrogen?
Lighted splint ? squeaky pop
What is the test for oxygen?
Glowing splint - relights
What is the test for carbon dioxide?
Limewater ? turns milky
What is the test for chlorine?
Blue litmus ? turns white
