What are the 4 things that humans use the Earth?s resources to provide?
Warmth, shelter, food and transport
What is a finite resource? Give examples.
One that we cannot replaced as quickly as we use it e.g. coal, iron ore
What is a sustainable resource?
One that we can replace as quickly as we use it e.g. wood
What must water have only low levels of to make it safe to drink?
Dissolved salts and bacteria
What is the name given to water that is safe to drink?
Potable water
What is the difference between pure and potable water?
Potable water is not ?pure? it contains some dissolved solids
Where does most of our drinking water come from?
Rivers, reservoirs, boreholes
What are the 2 main stages of the process that we use to make our water safe to drink?
Filtration ? remove solids. Sterilisation (using chlorine, ozone, UV light) ? to kill bacteria
To get water from sea water what two processes can be used?
Desalination can either be done by ? distillation or reverse osmosis
What are the disadvantages of these techniques?
Need a lot of energy so expensive
What is sewage?
Water from homes and washed off roads
What is in agricultural waste water?
Water from farms (can include animal waste and fertilisters)
What are the main things that need to be removed from sewage and agricultural waste water?
Organic matter (faeces, leaves, paper) and harmful bacteria
What is the main thing that needs to be removed from industrial waste water?
Harmful chemicals
In sewage treatment what is used to break down the human waste and plant material?
