C7 Laws Of Motion & Momentum Flashcards
State Newton’s first law of motion
An object in motion will remain in motion at a constant velocity, or at rest, unless acted upon by a resultant force.
State Newton’s third law of motion
When two objects interact, they exert forces equal in magnitude and opposite in direction on each other.
State the Principle of Momentum
In a closed system, the total momentum before an interaction is equal to the total momentum after the interaction, provided no external forces act on the system.
State Newton’s second law of motion
The net force acting on an object is directly proportional to the rate of change of its momentum, and acts in the same direction.
Formula relating momentum, force (subject) and time
F = change in momentum / change in time
What is the impulse of a force, and how is it calculated?
The change in momentum of an object, calculated as force x change in time.
What does the area under a force-time graph represent?
It represents impulse, change in momentum.
Resolving X direction momentum
m1v0 = m1v1 cosθ1 + m2v2 cosθ2
Resolving Y direction momentum
0 = m1v1 sinθ1 + m2v2 sinθ2
