C25 Radioactivity Flashcards

1
Q

Why is radiation called ‘ionising’?

A

Radiation is called ionising because they can ionise atoms by removing electrons, leaving positive ions.

Q

How does a Cloud Chamber work?

A
  • It contains saturated air with vapour at a very low temperature.
  • When air molecules are ionises the liquid condenses onto the ions to leave tracks of droplets to mark the path of the radiation.

Beta Radiation: Structure, charge

A
  • Fast moving electrons B-, or fast moving positrons B+.
  • Charge can be e+ or e-, based on whether it’s beta+ or beta- particles.
