C6 - Rate Of Reaction Flashcards
What 4 factors can effect the rate of reaction?
Temperature
Surface area
Catalyst
Pressure/ concentration
How does temperature effect the rate of reaction?
Causes particles to have more kinetic energy so they move faster and collide more frequently.
How does pressure/concentration effect rate of reaction?
Causes more particles in the same volume = crowding
Meaning more frequent collisions
How does surface area effect rate of reaction?
Increases the number of particles exposed by smaller pieces = more frequent collisions
How do catalyst effect the rate of reaction?
Decrease the activation energy.
Speeds up the reaction without being used up by providing an alternative pathway.
When can equilibrium only be reached?
When a reversible reaction takes place in a closed system.
If the forward reaction is endothermic. What will happen if temp is increased?
Increasing temp will mean equilibrium will want to decrease the temperature meaning it will favour the forward as its endothermic so will move to the products causing more yield.
If the reaction is reversible what will all the factors do? (Opposite)
Concentration = move to opposite change
Pressure = number of gas molecules
Temp = exo/ endothermic
Catalyst = no impact on yield, only increases the rate of forward and backward reaction
Exo = increases temp
Endo = decreases temp
